Antimicrobial Resistance

Abstract

With the emergence and the reemergence of bacterial resistance to different commercialized antibiotics, the identification of novel antibacterial drugs such as natural bioactive compounds can constitute a promising alternative to fight against infectious diseases. Essential oils (EO) or volatile compounds extracted from aromatic plants have been reported as remarkable antibacterial bioactive compounds with several mechanisms of action. Indeed, they affect membrane integrity and permeability, interfere with proteins, disturb cell membrane and respiratory processes, inhibit biofilm formation, and dysregulate quorum sensing communication. In their chapter, we report the antibacterial effect of EOs against multidrug strains and their different mechanism insights, as well as their potential use in clinical trials as alternative to commercialized antibiotics.
