Psychological Ownership of Ones’ Organization Explains the Positive Relationship Between Corporate Social Responsibility Participation and Organizational Engagement

Abstract

This study aims to explore how CSR participation influences employees’ organizational engagement. Drawing on psychological ownership theory, we developed and tested a moderated mediation framework. With data collected from a field survey of several conglomerates in China, we found that employees’ CSR participation is positively related to organizational engagement. The results also confirm that the importance of CSR can moderate the mediation process among employees’ CSR participation, organization-based psychological ownership, and their organizational engagement. These results extend employee-focused CSR literature which has often been top-down and focused on how employees will be perceived CSR in previous studies. Rather, from an employee-focused perspective, the more employees can involve in CSR initiatives, the more organization-based psychological ownership they will feel, and the more engaged they might be in the organization.
