Abstract

Sense of control refers to an individual’s ability to make decisions about what happens around him, to have a sense of control over his behavior, and the ability to make plans independently. The sense of control exhibits different forms and degrees at various stages of life, and there are individual differences. As an important resource for handling and adapting to various life challenges in old age, the sense of control is a predictor of successful aging. As a complex psychological phenomenon, it is affected by multiple factors. The influencing factors include negative stereotypes, self-identification, social support, self-affirmation, and socio-demographic factors. Improving the sense of control of the elderly can enhance their sense of meaning in life, reduce the risk of depression and dementia, increase their sense of happiness and self-efficacy, and play an important role in coping with the aging of the population and promoting the physical and mental health of the elderly.
