Disability and Aging: A Literature Review on Advocacy and Activism for Sustainable and Resilient Community Living

Handbook of Disability

Abstract

The book chapter purports to provide insights, research gaps, and lessons using a narrative literature review approach. The discussion was centered on unveiling aging (aging with disability and disability with aging included) advocacy and activism for living arrangement-instutionalized, while taking inspiration from disability movement that is led by disabled people that adopted independent living as an example of community living. The discourse discovered that advocacy on aging began in the 1970s, while oriented toward feminism; however, the twenty-first century fosters social innovation as well as learning from independent living, thereby making the chapter to foster the idea of giving options for the aging population to choose preference on living arrangements that enhance freedom and dignity as essential human rights.
