Abstract
This article reports a comparative analysis of the microstructure of Al2TiO5, ZrO2, and Cr2O3 ceramic coatings sprayed on LM13 Aluminium alloy by plasma spray technique. The substrate material is in the form of small cylindrical billets of 10 mm diameter and 40 mm length. Coating thickness ranges between 200 and 250 µm with 4–5 inch stand-off distance and 600 amp, 50 kW as blasting parameters. The surface morphology investigations of the uncoated and coated specimens were done by scanning electron microscopy at 20 kV, high vacuum, and different magnifications followed by EDX analysis for the elemental composition studies. To determine the physical strength, hardness tests of the coatings were also performed. Feasibility of the use of plasma spray deposition as a method of producing high-performance ceramic coatings is the objective of this work. Cr2O3 ceramic coating shows favourable outcomes in morphological analysis and hardness tests, suitable to use in high temperature conditions like cylinder and piston rings of internal combustion engines.
