Abstract
Nanomaterials are currently of utmost importance due to the technological advancements brought from their tailored physical, chemical, and biological properties which lead to superior performance concerning their bulk counterparts. The huge amount of different nanomaterials present in the industrial world and actual research literature requires rationalization with regard to their main characteristics. The several nano-objects belonging to the nanomaterials can be distinguished by their size, kind, shape, aggregate, or agglomerate structure, for instance. The classification of nanoscale materials involving their definition is the subject of this chapter. The main categorizations considered have been (i) the dimensionality of nanomaterials related to their size ranging between 1 and 100 nm, (ii) the individuation of nanomaterials by the type considering the main substances that compose the nanomaterial, (iii) the relevance of morphology for the classification in which full nanomaterials, hollow nanomaterials, nanosheets, nanomaterial of complex architecture, core–shell nanoparticles and nanomembranes can be distinguished, and finally (iv) the classification of nanomaterials by the origin of production.
