Abstract
This chapter introduces the school system and school mathematics curriculum in Singapore. A brief overview of the system of schooling from the primary to the secondary years is provided. It also introduces the general features of the school mathematics curriculum that are relevant for one to appreciate the enactment of it particularly in the secondary schools that unfolds in Chapters 3–15. The framework of the school mathematics curriculum that has been steadfast since 1990 is elaborated. In addition to the aims and goals of the school mathematics curriculum the interconnected nature of mathematics courses that cater to the diverse abilities of students in the primary and secondary schools is also described. Lastly, the achievement of Singapore students in benchmark studies such as Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is briefly reviewed.
