Developing, Maintaining and Using Active Learning Resources for Online Learning and Teaching

Tertiary Online Teaching and Learning

Abstract

The DoITPoMS (Dissemination of IT for the promotion of Materials Science) project was set up in 2000, as a joint venture involving the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge, and a number of other UK partner institutions. Over two decades, the project has developed open online educational resources in Materials Science and promoted their use. These resources include background information, digital video clips and photomicrographs, but the primary resource is a library of teaching and learning packages (TLPs), which are generally interactive and seek to make maximum use of the online medium to provide richer content than would be possible in traditional printed resources, which were the standard at the outset of the project. In addition to describing development of these resources, this chapter assesses how changes in technology and use patterns over 20 years have had an impact on their sustainability.

Acknowledgements

I am most grateful to the Director of the DoIPoMS project, Professor Bill Clyne who continues to lead development of resources with the assistance of a number of academic colleagues in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge. Thanks are also due to David Brook and Lianne Sallows, who are responsible for technical development and maintenance. Funding for the project has come via a number of sources, as discussed in the chapter, but those with primary input are the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the UK Centre for Materials Education and the Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy, University of Cambridge.
