Abstract

Excellence in anaesthesia forms the foundation for the best retinal surgery outcomes. This chapter reviews anaesthesia for ophthalmic surgery in general, and in particular for vitreo-retinal (VR) patients. A brief look at the history of ophthalmic anaesthesia leads on to a detailed review of patient assessment, preparation and counselling for retinal operations. Regional ophthalmic anaesthesia is discussed in some detail as it is the mainstay for most modern VR procedures. This includes ophthalmic anaesthetic block and sedation techniques, and also looks at the drugs and complications that may be encountered. General anaesthesia and postoperative anaesthetic management of the VR patient are also addressed. The most successful outcomes for retinal surgery patients occur when care is provided in a collaborative and cooperative approach, with good communication between the anaesthetic and surgical teams.
