Artificial Intelligence

Abstract

In his 1942 short novel, science fiction writer Isaac Asimov proposed three laws of robotics—engineering safety measures and built-in ethical standards to ensure that robots will be kind to humanity and to help people avoid a machine doomsday. First, a robot cannot injure a human being or through inaction allow a human to be harmed; second, a robot must obey orders, unless these orders violate the first law; and third, a robot must protect itself, as long as this does not violate the first or second law.
