Abstract

Many steps in orthopedic surgery require cutting tools such as bone cutting, drilling, or sawing. The advantages of a sharp cutting tool range from surgical precision to contributing in rapid healing. In order to maintain such a vital inventory, proper knowledge of maintenance is necessary. The rationality of the preferred alloy Austenitic 316 L is based on its non-corrosive nature, being autoclavable and tough thus prolonging usability. The use of tungsten carbide holds the key to sharp nature of certain tools. The use of proper materials and correct techniques also prolong shelf life. The importance of sharpness in orthopedic surgery cannot be overestimated.
