Abstract
Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is significantly more sensitive, accurate, and effective than either computed tomography or transabdominal ultrasonography. EUS provides high-resolution images that can improve the diagnostic accuracy of pancreatobiliary disease. In addition, contrast-enhancing agents and color Doppler flow during EUS may increase the diagnostic rate of gallbladder disease. Because recent advances in imaging processors and endoscopic systems have made EUS safer and easier than before, it could be more helpful in the preoperative assessment of patients with gallbladder polyps suspected to be neoplastic, especially those, 7–20 mm in size. In cases of uncertainty of other imaging modalities, EUS could be more practical in the development of a treatment strategy for polypoid lesions and gallbladder wall thickening. Furthermore, EUS has several additional advantages including real-time scanning, fine-needle aspiration for tissue diagnosis, and the potential therapeutic application of biliary drainage. In this chapter, we aim to summarize the typical EUS findings of neoplastic/non-neoplastic polypoid lesions and gallbladder wall thickening.
