Abstract
Unlike M. tuberculosis, which is a true pathogen, to a large extent, environmental NTM is often associated with conditions where the host’s immunity is impaired, such as immunodeficiency, HIV, or the use of immunosuppressive drugs. The prevalence of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) appears to be increasing. Much of the experience in the literature on this emerging organism comes from specialized units or populations, such as patients with cystic fibrosis.
