Plant Metabolites: Methods, Applications and Prospects

Abstract

Polyphenolic compounds constitute one of the largest and most important groups of plant secondary metabolites because of their widespread occurrence in nature, with more than 8000 identified phenolic structures. Polyphenols are compounds with one or more hydroxyl groups attached to the benzene ring. One of the main properties of polyphenols is the antioxidant capacity, which has been related to the presence of hydroxyl groups in their chemical structure. This activity has been demonstrated in both in vitro and in vivo models aimed at preventing or treating diseases related to oxidative stress, such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and neurological disorders and inflammatory diseases, among others. Due to the promising results in experimental models in recent years, some clinical trials have been conducted in patients with various conditions treated with polyphenolic compounds. However, to date, there are few protocols completed. Likewise, the biological effect of polyphenols depends on their bioavailability. In the present manuscript, data were collected about biological activities, health beneficial properties and possible therapeutic applications of the polyphenolic compounds.
