Abstract

A 3D software can show drilling, MWD, LWD and geological data on web can enhances the monitoring and decision-making efficiency of drilling process. This paper describes an interactive web 3D visualization software for real-time drilling based on Internet of Things, presents software architecture, functionality and application. It is based on OpenGL, ActiveX, GLScene, an open source 3D library, and developed in a component-based way, including axis box, well track, logging curve, tube and formation components, which is easy to be extended in object-oriented manner. The system data has multi-layer architecture, the real-time data transfer from rig-sites to datacenter remotely and datacenter provides a data interface, software can retrieve data from the interface and show 3D scene in web browser, referring to some design ideas of WITSML, real-time data transmission scheme adopts HTTP REST mode and data objects are encapsulated in JSON format. 3D graphics acceleration is available in the web browser through ActiveX plugins, which achieves impressive performance. The software puts real-time and static data together to build a 3D scene realizing drilling visualization on web, which provides a convenient tool for technical experts to make remote support decisions in RTOC. The software is part of the “Engineering and Technology Internet of Thing”—ETIoT system, cooperated with other software systems. Drilling engineers can achieve better decisions with an intuitive understanding of the downhole environment. Field application shows that the visualization software has the characteristics of high reliability and easily extension.
