Abstract

Poverty elimination is often noted as a core policy objective in India as well as globally. If poverty elimination “alone” is used to measure success (as was stated in the Cabinet Secretariat press note while constituting NITI Aayog.), then India’s report card on poverty is dismal. Despite rapid economic growth and improvement on a range of development indicators, a large proportion of India’s population continues to suffer extreme poverty in multiple dimensions.
