Abstract
Common Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) is one of the nocturnal mammals distributed in South and Southeast Asia which facing several threats and one of the least studied mammals in Malaysia. The objective of this experiment is to identify the food preferences of this species based on different parameter, which are color, taste, size, and odor. Two civets with different gender had been placed in two different captivities and were fed with papayas (Carica papaya) and pears (Pyrus L.). The experiment had been done for 40 days. The result showed that the male civet preferred fruits with characteristics of largest size, blue color, sweet taste, and strong odor. In contrast, female civet preferred fruits with the largest size, purple color, sweet and salty taste, and medium odor. This study will be beneficial to the farmers and authority of wildlife in implementing pest control for trapping civets, and it will be guidance for the zookeepers and the civets’ owners to know the best type of foods for civets’ diet.
