Abstract

This chapter traces the life and works of Lin Yutang during the 1920s, that is, from when he assumed the professorship at Peking University in 1923 to his leaving Wuhan for Shanghai in 1927. The 1920s saw the rise of the Nationalist Revolution in China and was also a formative period in Lin’s career as a cross-cultural scholar and intellectual. It was in the trying socio-political environment of the 1920s that we see the growth of a progressive nationalist emerging onto the national intellectual scene. The chapter offers fresh accounts on Lin’s intervention into the debates on “National Learning” and on the reception of Tagore’s visit to China, and particularly on whether to adopt the intellectual disposition of “fair play” or “beating drowning dogs.”
