Abstract
The 14 chapters that comprise this volume reveal how the nucleolus is being viewed today. No longer is it a basic factory turning out ribosomal components as required. It is more than that. It is a dynamic intranuclear compartment that is involved in the stress response and many diseases including various forms of cancer. In spite of what is known, much remains to be learned about nucleolar structure and function. This chapter summarizes some of these issues with a view to where research on this dynamic cellular entity is heading.
