Handbook of Global Bioethics

Abstract

Many professionals in Colombia became interested in ethical matters several decades ago; the most representative of them are mentioned in this chapter. However, many other thinkers not mentioned here deserve recognition for their work on behalf of bioethics in Colombia. Teachers and researchers have built and promoted bioethics at all levels (teaching and learning, research, publications, advising, consulting, involvement in scientific events, legal formulations), not only in Colombia but also in Latin America. Even though the first steps in this discipline took place in the area of health, their application has expanded to other fields of knowledge. The major universities in Colombia have been in the vanguard from the beginning in the initiation and development of bioethics, dealing with different topics of ethical reflection, with emphasis on techno-scientific advances and at the same time concern with the protection, care, and preservation of human life and the environment.
