Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk worden dilemma’s besproken die psychologen en psychotherapeuten tijdens de behandeling van een patiënt met medisch en psychologisch onverklaarde lichte cognitieve stoornissen tegen kunnen komen. In dit kader wordt het DSM-5-begrip ‘beperkte neurocognitieve stoornis’ toegelicht. Bij aanvang van een reguliere behandeling is meestal niet bekend dat sprake is van een beperkte neurocognitieve stoornis en een negatieve invloed ervan kan pas in de loop van de tijd merkbaar worden. De behandelaar krijgt handvatten om, vooral middels observatie en gesprek, meer duidelijkheid te krijgen over de impact van dergelijke cognitieve stoornissen. Ook krijgt de lezer beknopte informatie over de relatie tussen de beperkte en de uitgebreide neurocognitieve stoornis (dementiesyndroom). Er worden mogelijkheden voor ingrijpen besproken voor als door deze stoornis een therapie stagneert.
