Abstract

Matige alcoholconsumptie is in het algemeen geen verkeerde gewoonte en kan zelfs gezondheidsvoordeel opleveren. De voordelen voor de gezondheid zijn voornamelijk een lagere kans om aan harten vaatziekten te overlijden en een lagere kans om ouderdomssuikerziekte te ontwikkelen. Excessief alcoholgebruik daarentegen levert nadelen voor de gezondheid op. In een aantal situaties zoals deelname aan het (gemotoriseerd) verkeer, werk, voor of tijdens het sporten, zwangerschap en in combinatie met medicijngebruik (afhankelijk van de soort medicijn) kan alcoholgebruik riskant zijn en beter geheel achterwege worden gelaten.
