Essential US for Trauma: E-FAST

Abstract

Background: Efficient integrated emergency medical systems are lowering mortality rates comparatively to the past in trauma management. Focused assessment with sonography for trauma aids in the detection of the source of bleeding. This exam may expedite definite care and lower costs of treatment if the proper surgical management is applied and most importantly in the hemodynamically unstable patient.

Methods: This chapter was written based on personnel experience in clinical ultrasound, as well as the authors’ preference of medical literature on trauma care and surgical ultrasound.

Discussion: In a straightforward manner, one reviews focused assessment in sonography for trauma by looking at scanning technique, anatomy, and normal and abnormal findings that may be encountered, as well as some scanning tips and tricks used to obtain more information during examinations.
