Abstract
La statistica matematica è quell’area della teoria del caso (stocastica) che si preoccupa di determinare probabilità concrete a partire da dati di osservazione. Quindi si occupa del problema ‘‘inverso’’ rispetto a quello affrontato dalla teoria della probabilità. In quest’ultima, infatti, si suppone nota la misura di probabilità \(P\), e a partire da essa si calcolano medie, varianze e altre grandezze significative con regole precise. In statistica, invece, \(P\) non è nota o, anche se ne è nota la forma generale (ad esempio una distribuzione Gaussiana), essa dipende da parametri (come la media e la varianza nel caso di una distribuzione Gaussiana) che non sono noti, ma vanno inferiti (cioè stimati) dai dati osservati.
Dopo un breve cenno storico, il capitolo passa a trattare i concetti di XXX e di massima verosimiglianza, senza distorsione e asintoticamente consistenti. Segue poi un breve accenno al concetto di intervalli di confidenza per la stima di parametri da cui dipendono le misure di probabilità (distribuzioni) ricercate. Il breve corso termina con cenni al concetto di test statistico, in casi sempici, come pure a quozienti di somiglianza e modelli esponenziali.
