Abstract

There is a limited reserve of the petroleum fuels and the world is already facing acute energy crisis. Besides this, the petroleum fuels are the dominant global sources of carbon dioxide emission. This research work provides an overview on the usage of a blend of jatropha methyl ester (JME) with oil obtained by the pyrolysis of waste tyre in diesel engine while varying the injection timing (IT) in order to improve the combustion parameters of the engine. Experiments were conducted in a single cylinder diesel engine at the advanced (24.5 °CA bTDC), standard (23 °CA bTDC), and retarded IT (21.5 °CA bTDC) for the blend and results were compared with diesel fuel and also with JME operation. The combustion parameters of the diesel engine were calculated in terms of cylinder pressure history, cumulative heat release, maximum heat release rate, maximum cylinder pressure, and mass fraction burned. For the blend with advancement of IT, the maximum cylinder pressure and cumulative heat release rate are enhanced.
