Abstract

In this chapter, materials that constitute phosphorescent OLED (PHOLED) are discussed. Especially, it is described that dopant and host materials used in an emitting layer such as the phosphorescent triscyclometalated iridium (III) complexes and host materials to confine excitation energy of the triplet excitons. Photophysical and photochemical properties of homoleptic and heteroleptic iridium complexes are elucidated. Coordinations of three bidentate ligands to iridium atom provide octahedral structure taking facial (fac) and meridional (mer) configurations. Their characters in the excited state and mechanism of photochemical isomerization are discussed extensively. In addition, development of wet-processable host materials for PHOLED device is described.
