Abstract
The Tohoku earthquake on March 11, 2011, officially named as “Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku, Japan Earthquake” by JMA, caused an unprecedentedly severe disaster on the northeastern part of Honshu (Tohoku), Japan. In this first volume of the series of books, namely, Natural Disaster Science and Mitigation Engineering: DPRI reports, we covered various aspects of investigations on scientific findings as well as issues related to the disaster and the subsequent evacuation due to the earthquake. The series of books presents recent advances in natural disaster sciences and mitigation technologies developed in Japan, which would be valuable for the mitigation of disasters due to similar kind of future events around the world.
