Abstract
Hermann Laurent nait en 1841 à Luxembourg dans une famille bourgeoise. Son père, Augustin, est considéré comme un des créateurs de la chimie organique. Laurent est reçu à l’École polytechnique en 1860 et complète sa formation à l’École d’application de l’artillerie et du génie de Metz. En 1865, il soutient à la Faculté des sciences de Nancy, une thèse intitulée Sur la continuité des fonctions imaginaires et des séries en particulier1.
