Zusammenfassung

Die großen Entwicklungen in der Intensivmedizin ermöglichen immer mehr Menschen die Akutphase schwerer Erkrankungen und Unfälle zu überleben. Die erforderliche Behandlung dieser akut lebensbedrohenden Zustände kann Wochen bis Monate in Anspruch nehmen. Das Überleben dieser schweren Krankheitsphasen wird dann zu einem Behandlungserfolg, wenn der Patient seine Funktionsfähigkeit auf körperlicher Ebene sowie auf der Ebene der Aktivität und der sozialen Partizipation zurückgewinnen kann. Die Funktionsfähigkeit im Alltag und die soziale Reintegration sind - unabhängig von der Grunderkrankung - in hohem Maße von der Funktionsfähigkeit des zentralen und peripheren Nervensystems, des muskuloskeletalen Systems, der psychische Situation und der kardiovaskulären Fitness des Patienten abhängig.
