Abstract

Diagnostic processes in medicine as well as in psychotherapy are never experienced by patients as purely diagnostic, but always have an influence on the experience and evaluation of the entire treatment situation. The moment of the first contact with the doctor or psychotherapist is already the beginning of a therapeutic relationship, which, if it is patient-orientated and expertly designed, already has a healing effect as a helpful relationship. How a patient-oriented approach can be competently designed via the various diagnostic dimensions – general patient history, screening of psychosocial risk factors and psychological symptoms and special interview procedures for validating psychological comorbidity – is also the subject of the following chapter, as is the linking of psychological and somatic findings within the framework of psychophysiological diagnostics.
