Zusammenfassung

Die soziale Ungleichheit von Lebenschancen ist ein zentrales Thema soziologischer Analyse. Dies gilt auch für die Betrachtung des Alterns. In diesem Kapitel werden biologische, psychologische und soziologische Aspekte des Alterns unter dem Gesichtspunkt sozialer Ungleichheit erörtert. Die dabei zu Tage tretenden Wechselbeziehungen verdeutlichen den heuristischen Wert eines biopsychosozialen Modells des Alterns. Neue, daraus hervorgehende Erkenntnisse sind nicht nur wissenschaftlich, sondern auch praktisch bedeutsam. Der Nachweis kumulativer Benachteiligung bei Chancen gesunden Alterns, von der Personen mit niedriger Bildung und prekärem beruflichem Status vermehrt betroffen sind, verdeutlicht die Notwendigkeit, bei Angeboten der Prävention und Therapie entsprechende Prioritäten zu setzen.
