The Running Athlete

Abstract

Running in athletics covers different distances with specific technical and training aspects requiring dedicated physical qualities: explosive strength in sprint running and endurance in long-distance running.

Acute injuries are more frequent in short-distance running while overuse injuries affect more frequently middle- and long-distance runners. Marathon requires a more specific resistance training to improve the aerobic power levels and raise the anaerobic threshold values. Prevention strategies include a modulated training progression, appropriate nutrition, wear and shoes and frequent checks to reduce overtraining risks. Prevention of overuse injuries is of paramount importance for a safe and prolonged career.
