Zusammenfassung
Eine der größten Herausforderungen etablierter Unternehmen ist es, das bestehende Geschäft effizient weiterzuführen und gleichzeitig die Zukunftsfähigkeit durch Investitionen in neue, innovative Geschäftsfelder zu sichern. Diese Herausforderung wird „organisationale Ambidextrie“ genannt und beschreibt den Spagat zwischen der kurzfristigen Optimierung des Kerngeschäfts und der gleichzeitig langfristigen Erkundung und Realisierung von zukunftsträchtigen Innovationen. Etablierte Unternehmen setzen eine Vielzahl an Praktiken ein, um sich dieser Herausforderung zu stellen. Einer dieser Praktiken ist das sogenannte Corporate Venture Building, welches den systematischen Aufbau von Neugeschäft mit einem Schwerpunkt auf Effizienz und Skalierung unter Verwendung standardisierter Prozesse und gemeinsamer Ressourcen beschreibt.
In diesem Beitrag wird anhand einer 3 × 3-Matrix dargelegt, welche unterschiedlichen Praktiken Unternehmen einsetzen, um Innovationen bzw. Neugeschäft zu managen. Detailliert wird dabei auf das Corporate Venture Building als empfohlene Praktik für das Inkubationsmanagement eingegangen sowie ein 7-stufiger Inkubationsprozess vorgestellt, der durch eine Analyse der Vorgehensweise verschiedener Venture Builder entstanden ist. Dieser 7-stufige Prozess dient als Leitfaden für den effizienten und systematischen Aufbau von Neugeschäft bzw. die Erschließung neuer Innovationsquellen. Den Abschluss des Beitrages bilden Empfehlungen für das Inkubationsmanagement im Unternehmensumfeld.

Weitere Definitionen von Corporate Venturing gibt Burgelman (1983), der unter Corporate Venturing die Investition in Möglichkeiten, die für ein Unternehmen neu sind, untergliedert. Markham et al. (2005) dagegen verstehen unter Corporate Venturing einen strategischen Mechanismus zur Gewinnung, Qualifizierung und Monetarisierung von Werten aus Vermögen, das von außen kommt und/oder nicht eindeutig zum bestehenden strategischen Fokus der Organisation passt.

Die Einordnung der Beispiele ist im Rahmen der wissenschaftlichen Analyse im Zeitraum von 2017 bis 2019 entstanden. Die strategische Ausrichtung von Unternehmensprogrammen kann sich jedoch über den Zeitverlauf nicht selten stark verändern. So kann sich die strategische Zielrichtung im Corporate Venturing ändern und ein Programm, welches zu dem Zeitpunkt der Beitragsveröffentlichung als Intrapreneur zu beschreiben war, sich zu einem Company Builder oder reinem Strategic Investor umstrukturieren.

Im Kontext der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Unternehmen mit Start-ups prägte der Gründer der BMW Start-up Garage, Gregor Gimmy (2017), den Begriff „Venture Client“. Die Idee ist, die Funktion der Risikokundin bzw. des Risikokunden einzunehmen und zu einem viel früheren Zeitpunkt als normalerweise üblich mit einem Start-up zusammenzuarbeiten und es schneller zum Erfolg zu führen.
