Abstract

Sagittal balance is a subject which has come to the forefront of our understanding of spine biomechanics. The more the population ages, the more degenerative spinal changes have an important impact on quality of life. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the reader to the basics of spinopelvic balance, to define the main parameters of sagittal balance, and to show how the human body adapts to compensate for deformities in order to keep the trunk balanced.
