Zusammenfassung
Gewichtheben ist als olympische Sportart ununterbrochen seit 1896 im olympischen Programm. Historisch wird es zurückgeführt auf die Gestalt des Milon von Kroton, der in der Siegerliste von 532 v. Chr. erwähnt wird. Weltweit wird Gewichtheben derzeit von 193 Nationen betrieben. In einigen Ländern ist es Hauptsportart, in Deutschland allerdings eine Randsportart; deshalb fallen die Zahlen der aktiven Jugendlichen und Kinder im Vergleich beispielsweise zu den Spielsportarten bescheiden aus. Im Bundesverband Deutscher Gewichtheber sind derzeit 2056 Kinder und Jugendliche gelistet, davon 1507 männlich und 549 weiblich. Der Verband hat mit Datum April 2021 214 Vereine, von denen aber nur 163 Kinder und Jugendarbeit leisten; zumindest sind in den übrigen Vereinen keine Kinder und Jugendliche gelistet (Mantek F., pers. Mitteilung). Es gibt Schulsportinitiativen, die allerdings in Abhängigkeit von vorhandenen sportartspezifisch versierten Lehrern nur punktuell erfolgreich sind. Es handelt sich um eine Schnellkraftsportart mit kompliziertem Bewegungsablauf, bestehend aus zwei Teildisziplinen: Reißen und Stoßen.
