Zusammenfassung

Adipositas ist mit einer Reihe von chronischen Erkrankungen sowie mit einer geringeren Lebenserwartung assoziiert. Die systematische Aufarbeitung weltweit relevanter Daten aus bevölkerungsbasierten epidemiologischen Studien sowie nationalen und regionalen Gesundheitssurveys mit verfügbaren Messungen von Körpergewicht und -größe hat gezeigt, dass die Prävalenz von Adipositas (BMI ≥30,0 kg/m2) in den letzten vier Jahrzehnten global angestiegen ist und weltweit 10,8 % der Männer und 14,9 % der Frauen betroffen sind. Die höchsten Adipositasprävalenzen werden bei Männern und Frauen in Polynesien und Mikronesien beobachtet, gefolgt von englischsprachigen Ländern mit hohem Einkommen sowie bei Frauen im südlichen Afrika, im Nahen Osten und Nordafrika. Auch bei Kindern und Jugendlichen wurde ein weltweiter Anstieg der Adipositasprävalenz beobachtet. Zur Verringerung der negativen gesundheitlichen Folgen von Adipositas auf Populationsebene kommt der Adipositasprävention eine Schlüsselrolle zu. Da Kinder und Jugendliche mit einem erhöhten BMI auch eine höhere Wahrscheinlichkeit haben, im Erwachsenenalter von Übergewicht und Adipositas betroffen zu sein, sollte die Adipositasprävention bereits im Kindes- und Jugendalter ansetzen.
