Abstract
Infection remains one of the most challenging complications following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Not only is it the most common reason for revision after TKA, but there is often little evidence to guide clinicians in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of this devastating complication. In 2018, during the International Consensus Meeting (ICM), over 800 delegates from 98 countries have gathered to discuss infection-related issues and questions utilizing a standardized strict process, the Delphi method. Recommendations were then made based on the currently available literature and voted upon by experts that included orthopedic surgeons, infectious disease physicians, and other specialists. This chapter is intended to guide physicians and summarize clinically relevant questions and recommendations regarding prosthetic joint infection in surgical site infection. Given the large number of questions discussed at the ICM, areas of clinical importance will be highlighted.
