Abstract
This chapter critically elucidates from a postcolonial perspective a symptomatic historical void in Klaus Modick’s novel The Gray of the Caroline Islands (1986). For this purpose, the text is confronted with source material about an anticolonial insurgency on the island of Ponape (since 1984: Pohnpei). The German navy suppressed the rebellion of the people of the Ponapean district of Sokehs in 1910/11 with fatal consequences for this community. Despite its aesthetic qualities as world literature, taking a critical stance against the militarization of the Pacific, Modick’s novel omits the account of the Ponape rebellion while even shedding a positive light on German colonial rule in the Pacific.
