Zusammenfassung
Etwa 75 % des Körperjods wird in der Schilddrüse gespeichert, weitere Orte sind die Speicheldrüsen, die Magenschleimhaut sowie die laktierenden Brustdrüsen. Jod, das nicht gespeichert wird, wird renal ausgeschieden. Indirekt kann aus diesem Zahlenwert die Jodversorgung ermittelt werden. Konzentrationen von 100–299 μg Jod/l Urin werden von der WHO als ausreichende Versorgung definiert. Der Zusammenhang von Jodversorgung, Schilddrüsenvolumen und Synthese von Tetrajodthyronin (T4, Thyroxin) ist seit langem bekannt. Ein Spektrum von Störungen infolge eines Jodmangels wird zusammenfassend als „iodine deficiency disorders (IDD)“ bezeichnet. Bereits ein milder Jodmangel kann zu einer gestörten Hirnentwicklung führen. Ebenso ist ein chronischer Jodmangel Ursache für die Entstehung einer Struma (multi-)nodosa und einer Schilddrüsenautonomie. ‚Ein chronischer Jodmangel, der nicht behandelt wird, hat eine Hypothyreose und einen Kleinwuchs zur Folge‘.
