Zusammenfassung
Störche sind in 20 Arten (6 Gattungen) über weite Teile der Alten und Neuen Welt sowie im indo-australischen Raum verbreitet. Nur drei Arten kommen auch in den gemäßigten Zonen vor, alle anderen sind reine Tropenvögel. Nachdem sie taxonomisch viele Jahre zusammen mit anderen Schreitvögeln, z. B. den Reihern (Ardeidae) und den Ibissen/Löfflern (Threskiornithidae) in der Ordnung Ciconiiformes zusammengefasst waren, haben neuere phylogenetische Studien ergeben, dass diese Arten in drei Ordnungen aufzuspalten sind, nämlich die Suliformes (Tölpel, Kormorane u. a.), die Pelecaniformes (Ruderfüßer und Schreitvögel) und – als eigenständige Ordnung mit nur einer Familie – die Ciconiiformes (Störche) (Ericson et al. 2006; Winkler et al. 2015).
