Bei der Regulation eines Hormons geht es um seine Bildung oder Synthese, seine Ausschüttung oder Sekretion und seine Wirkung auf einen oder mehrere Rezeptoren. Im zweiten Teil des Abschnittes wird gezeigt, welche Konzentrationen von Hormonen der hypothalisch-hypophysär-gonadalen Achse gebildet werden müssen, um eine normale Reproduktionsfähigkeit zu erhalten.
