Zusammenfassung
Kohlenhydrate und besonders Glukose stellen Energie für die Zellen des Körpers zur Verfügung. Außerdem ist Glukose ein Substrat für die Synthese von Glykoproteinen, Glykolipiden, Nukleotiden, nichtessenziellen Aminosäuren und spezifischen Fettsäuren. Zusätzlich bildet Glukose einen Baustein für Strukturmoleküle der Zellmembran. Schließlich nehmen Glukose und ihre phosphorylierte Form, Glukose-6-Phosphat, eine Schlüsselstellung innerhalb vieler Stoffwechselwege ein. Blutzellen und das Zentralnervensystem sind außerdem gänzlich auf die Zufuhr von Glukose angewiesen.
