Zusammenfassung
Der therapeutische Effekt der Lichtherapie wurde erstmals in den 1980er-Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts systematisch untersucht und es zeigte sich, dass Patienten mit einer Herbst-/Winter- bzw. einer Lichtmangeldepression günstig auf Lichttherapie ansprechen. Die Lichtintensität sollte zwischen 2500 und 10.000 Lux (gemessen an den Augen) liegen und entsprechend der Lichtintensität sollte die Dauer der Lichttherapie zwischen einer 1/2–4 h pro Tag betragen. Im Vergleich zur Psychopharmakotherapie tritt der antidepressive Effekt bereits ab dem 3. Tag ein. Eine verordnete antidepressive Medikation kann gleichzeitig weiter verabreicht werden. Die wenigen bis jetzt zur Verfügung stehenden psychophysiologischen Untersuchungen lassen erkennen, dass dem serotonergen System eine besondere Bedeutung zukommt. Interessanterweise haben jedoch auch Medikamente, die primär die noradrenergen bzw. dopaminergen Stoffwechelwege aktivieren, einen günstigen Erfolg gezeigt. Die Lichttherapie bei den nicht saisonal abhängigen Depressionen weist keine so deutlichen Effekte auf und kann als Zusatztherapie zur Psychopharmkotherapie gegebenenfalls angewandt werden.
