Zusammenfassung
Die Gattung Bartonella umfasst gramnegative, fakultativ intrazelluläre, stäbchenförmige Bakterien, die nach dem peruanischen Bakteriologen Alberto Leonardo Barton benannt wurden. Sie sind phylogenetisch eng mit den Genera Rickettsia und Brucella verwandt. Zurzeit sind über 30 Bartonella-Spezies beschrieben. Die wichtigsten Erreger sind B. henselae, B. quintana und B. bacilliformis. Die Krankheitsbilder reichen von leichten lokalen bis hin zu schwersten systemischen Infektionsverläufen. Bartonellen sind die einzigen Bakterien, die pathologisches Blutgefäßwachstum auslösen können.
