Zusammenfassung
Bakterien der Gattung Bacillus und verwandter Gattungen sind fakultativ aerob wachsende, sporenbildende Stäbchen, die sich überwiegend grampositiv, selten gramvariabel anfärben. Die zahlreichen Bacillus-Arten sind sehr umweltresistent und kommen häufig als Kontaminanten in der Umwelt vor. Drei Arten (Bacillus anthracis, B. cereus und B. subtilis) sind klinisch relevant. Bacillus anthracis und B. cereus wirken durch Toxinbildung. Obligat pathogen ist Bacillus (B.) anthracis, der Erreger des Milzbrandes.
