Zusammenfassung

Die Zahl der adipösen Kinder und Erwachsenen ist in wohlhabenden, aber mittlerweile auch in Schwellenländern, weiterhin auf einem Höchststand. Körperliche Folgen wie z. B. Bluthochdruck oder Diabetes Typ 2 müssen behandelt werden und sind für die betroffenen Personen und für die Gesundheitssysteme eine hohe Belastung. Weniger auffällig für das soziale Umfeld sind die psychischen Folgen. Stigmatisierung und geringes Selbstwertgefühl bis hin zur Depression führen oft zur Vereinsamung und ein substanzieller Anteil von Menschen mit Adipositas erlebt Essanfälle, die meist als Reaktion auf eine negative Stimmungslage auftreten. Die Therapie der Adipositas kann langfristig erfolgreich sein, eine überdauernde, substanzielle Gewichtsreduktion ist allerdings nur in einer Minderheit der Fälle zu erwarten. Eine bedeutende Aufgabe ist daher die Steigerung der Maßnahmen zur Prävention. Diese Maßnahmen sollten Risikofaktoren in der Umwelt beachten und verändern, über gesundes Ess- und Aktivitätsverhalten informieren und zu einer Destigmatisierung der Adipositas in der Gesellschaft führen.
