Abstract

The Edwin Smith’ Papyrus is the first written document in which nose surgery is mentioned. Dating back to 1650 B.C., according to James Henry Breasted, the papyrus should be a copy, enriched with 69 explication notes, of a still more ancient manuscript (dated 2500–3000 BC), which focused on the analysis of different types of trauma. Of the 48 reported cases on this papyrus (each case was explained from inspection to the diagnosis and sometimes even to treatment), four of them concerned the nose (XI-A break of the column of his nose, XII-A break in the chamber of his nose, XIII-A smash in the nostril, XIV-A wound in his nostril). The authorship of this precious document has been attributed to Imhotep, Vizier of Pharaoh Necherjet Dyeser and such a famous doctor to be deified and worshiped as the Egyptian God of Medicine [1].
