Zusammenfassung
Wasser war und ist die Grundlage des Lebens auf der Erde. Entstanden in der Tiefe des Urozeans, hat das Leben eine lange Geschichte hinter sich. Viele Millionen von Jahren waren notwendig, um im Wasser aus einfachen chemischen Verbindungen komplexe, für das Leben geeignete Biomoleküle zu bilden. Die Urformen des Lebens bekamen ihre Gestalt in Unterwasserquellen. Mit der Zeit verließen die Urzellen ihr Zuhause, stürmten die bislang unbelebte Welt und gestalteten sie gewaltig um. Durch Veränderungen von Erbgut und Umweltbedingungen entwickelten sich neue Lebensformen und neue Eigenschaften, die in den Wettbewerb der Evolution eintraten. Aus Einzellern entwickelten sich vielzellige Organismen, die Urahnen der Pflanzen und Tiere. Nun besiedelten Pflanzen und Tiere Kontinente, jedoch ohne Wasserverfügbarkeit können sie bis heute nicht überleben.
