Abstract
“Acute seroma syndrome” in augmented breast represents a new clinical entity completely different from early postoperative seroma and late seromas. It is an acute bilateral and symmetrical breast enlargement with severe local inflammatory reaction, during an infection located into another body area, most commonly on the throat. There is no connection with any kind of trauma on the breasts. The acute seroma on augmented breast during a regional infection (bacterial or viral) is similar to other serous membrane reaction as acute mesenteric lymphadenitis (simulating acute appendicitis) and the acute gonococchal perihepatitis in Fitz Hugh-Curtis syndrome (simulating acute cholecystitis). This serous membrane reaction comes during the regional inflammatory reaction, when the lymphatic channels and lymph nodes are under stress and a high hydrostatic pressure and hyperpermeability lead to acute fluid extravasations, without any local bacterial or viral contamination. For these reasons, the authors define it as pericapsular lymphangitis and acute seroma syndrome in augmented breast.
