Zusammenfassung
Für eine wissenschaftliche Analyse der Tätigkeiten internationaler Organisationen ist eine fundierte theoretische Argumentation unerlässlich. Das Kapitel vermittelt hierfür einen anwendungsorientierten theoretischen „Handwerkskasten“. Zunächst wird in die Grundannahmen der drei in den Internationalen Beziehungen vorherrschenden „Großtheorien“ der Internationalen Beziehungen, Neorealismus, Liberalismus und Konstruktivismus, aber auch der sogenannten Kritischen Theorien eingeführt. Anschließend werden die Theorien im Hinblick auf die Bedeutung diskutiert, die sie internationalen Organisationen zuschreiben. Aus der Perspektive des Neorealismus sind internationale Organisationen Instrumente mächtiger Staaten. Der Liberalismus versteht internationale Organisationen als Arenen für zwischenstaatliche Verhandlungen, während der Konstruktivismus diese als eigenständige Akteure der Weltpolitik begreift. Aus einer kritischen Perspektive sind internationale Organisationen schließlich ein Mittel zur Stabilisierung einer bestimmten Ordnung der Weltpolitik. Empirische Anwendungsbeispiele verdeutlichen, wie die verschiedenen Theorienperspektiven konkret für die Analyse von Entwicklung, Struktur und Funktionsweise internationaler Organisationen eingesetzt werden können.

Der neogramscianische Produktionsbegriff bezieht sich dabei nicht alleine auf die Herstellung und Nutzung materieller Güter, sondern auch auf die Produktion und Reproduktion von Wissen sowie auf soziale Beziehungen, welche die Voraussetzung für die Produktion physischer Güter sind (Cox 1989: S. 39). Egal ob es sich bei den Produktionsformen um landwirtschaftliche Subsistenzwirtschaft oder transnationale Konzerne handelt, entscheidend für die sozialen Produktionsbedingungen ist das reziproke Verhältnis von Produktion und Macht (Bieler und Morton 2010: S. 378).
